ZDF Fernsehgarten faces star boycott over low fees as 90s‑themed show airs

The ZDF Fernsehgarten, a long‑running Sunday‑afternoon show hosted by Andrea Kiewel from the Mainz Lerchenberg studios, continues to mix live music, cooking, and lifestyle segments. The 2026 season includes a “90s Party” episode featuring Schlager acts such as Guildo Horn, Masterboy, Captain Jack and Rednex, alongside a roster of DJs and dance performers.

Artists have repeatedly criticised the programme’s payment model. Singer‑songwriter Matthias Reim, veteran Roberto Blanco and ball‑room star Ikke Hüftgold noted that performers receive only a modest expense allowance – Hüftgold claimed it was €750 – rather than a standard fee, prompting some to decline invitations. The low compensation has sparked debate about fairness, even as the show remains an attractive platform for newcomers seeking exposure to a large audience.

Despite the controversy, the Fernsehgarten maintains high viewership and a packed schedule of themed episodes through the summer, reinforcing its role as a staple of German entertainment television.
