ZDF Fernsehgarten marks 40 years with heat measures, alcohol ban and guest‑pay controversy
The ZDF Fernsehgarten celebrated its 40th anniversary in June 2026. Long‑time host Andrea Kiewel, who has presented the Sunday live show since 2000, led the broadcast together with co‑host Ralf Moeller.
A severe heatwave pushed temperatures on the Mainzer Lerchenberg to 37 °C. The production removed tables, moved seats into the shade and asked some audience members to change places to avoid overheating. Kiewel joked about the conditions and even mentioned briefly cooling off under a shower during the live show.
Since May 2026 the venue has enforced a strict alcohol‑free policy. No alcoholic beverages may be brought in or served, a move intended to create a more family‑friendly atmosphere after reports of disruptive drunken behaviour at previous editions.
Artists appearing on the programme receive modest compensation. Mallorca‑artist Ikke Hüftgold disclosed a €750 expense allowance for his recent appearance and noted that many performers work at a loss, with only a few earning several thousand euros.
The show continues to draw up to 6 000 spectators per episode, featuring a mix of music, comedy and guest performances as part of the summer‑party format.
