ZDF strategy paper reveals shift in satirical programming direction

An internal strategy paper from the German public broadcaster ZDF, reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung, suggests a shift in the network's satirical programming. The document outlines a new direction for the upcoming satire show ‘Journal Deluxe’, hosted by comedian Florian Schroeder, which is set to premiere in late October.

The strategy aims to provide a ‘counterpoint’ to existing comedy formats by focusing criticism on groups that are less frequently targeted, specifically mentioning the Green Party, the Left, and similar political entities. The show is intended to offer a ‘change of perspective’ and break through ‘echo chambers,’ specifically targeting audiences that typically avoid public broadcasting.

Potential guests mentioned in the internal document include AfD leader Alice Weidel, tech billionaire Peter Thiel, and Gabriele Krone-Schmalz. This move follows ZDF's 2025 introduction of a talk show hosted by Jan Fleischhauer, which was also designed to appeal to a more conservative audience.
