ZDF film ‘Neues Land’ explores structural change in German mining regions

The ZDF television film ‘Neues Land’ explores the complexities of structural change in a former German brown coal mining region. Directed by Esther Rauch, the drama is set in the fictional town of Neukirch, located in the transition zones of Saxony, Saxony-Anhalt, and Thuringia.

The story follows Ina Sedlitz, a geologist played by Jördis Triebel, who returns to her hometown after 20 years. While attempting to transfer her inheritance of the family hotel to her niece, Mara, Ina discovers alarming geological instability near a lake created from a former mining pit. Her findings suggest a looming natural disaster, clashing with the optimistic, tourism-focused stance of her father, Walter Sedlitz, the local mayor and hotelier.

The film addresses themes of identity, family secrets, and the environmental and social consequences of the coal phase-out in East Germany.
