ZDF’s Award‑Winning Series ‘Sheep’ Features Real Sheep with Animated Dialogue
The German public‑service channel ZDF has released the five‑part miniseries ‘Sheep’, a comedy‑drama that mixes live‑action footage of real sheep with computer‑generated mouth movements synchronized to the voices of actors such as Jella Haase, Verena Altenberger and Birgit Minichmayr. The series follows the herd’s perspective on human life, work‑life balance and mortality, while the farmer’s family lives a monotonous routine.
In the story, a sheep named Oliver discovers that the farmer is selecting members of the herd for a mythic “Obermoser” and transporting them to the slaughterhouse, turning the pastoral satire into a critique of animal exploitation. ‘Sheep’, created by the Austrian duo Alex Reinberg and Leni Gruber, has been praised at multiple festivals and is now available in ZDF’s Mediathek.
