Zed and VS Code compete as new lightweight editor Wu emerges
The landscape of code editors is seeing significant performance shifts as Zed continues to challenge VS Code. Benchmarks indicate that Zed, built on a Rust-based architecture and the GPUI framework, offers substantial advantages in speed and resource management. In comparative tests, Zed demonstrated a cold start time of 0.12 seconds compared to VS Code’s 1.2 seconds, and maintained significantly lower memory usage, consuming approximately 222 MB of RAM versus VS Code’s 3,549 MB under heavy extension use.
Latency improvements are also notable, with Zed maintaining input latency around 2ms to 10ms, while VS Code latency has been recorded as high as 50ms under heavy loads. These performance gains allow developers to run resource-intensive tasks, such as Docker containers, more efficiently.
In this ecosystem, the open-source editor Wu has emerged as a Zed fork. Wu is designed to be a lightweight, high-speed, and offline-first alternative that removes features like telemetry, collaboration tools, and built-in AI services found in Zed, while retaining Zed’s core performance and extension compatibility. Wu specifically supports AI coding through integration with Claude Code and Codex.
