Zee Entertainment secures FIFA rights and launches Unite8 Sports channels in India
Zee Entertainment Enterprises Ltd. (ZEEL) has acquired exclusive media rights to 39 FIFA events from 2026 to 2034, covering the men's and women's World Cups, youth tournaments, futsal, and documentary content. The deal, valued at roughly USD 30‑35 million, is about 40‑50 % lower than the previous rights cycle. ZEEL will broadcast the matches on its newly created Unite8 Sports network – four channels (two standard and two HD) now available on over 500 cable and distribution platforms – and stream them via the ZEE5 platform. The acquisition is aimed at expanding ZEE5’s subscriber base by an estimated 2.5‑3 million users and attracting a younger, digitally‑engaged audience, as football viewership in India has grown sharply in recent years. While the 2026 World Cup will be hosted in North America with challenging time‑zone differences for Indian viewers, the 2030 edition in Morocco, Portugal and Spain promises more favorable windows. The launch marks a strategic shift for ZEEL from its traditional entertainment focus toward premium sports broadcasting.
