ZEE faces backlash over altered World Cup 2026 subscription plan as tournament launches

ZEE introduced three subscription options for the FIFA World Cup 2026 in India, including a ₹799 three‑month plan that originally allowed streaming on up to three devices. Shortly after purchase, many subscribers reported that the plan’s device limit had been reduced to a single screen, prompting criticism on social media and accusations of a misleading change. ZEE subsequently restored the three‑device allowance.

The 2026 tournament began with an expanded 48‑team format jointly hosted by the United States, Canada and Mexico. The opening match took place at Mexico City’s Estadio Azteca, where hosts Mexico faced South Africa. Zee Entertainment secured Indian broadcast rights for the event, ending months of uncertainty for Indian viewers and adding the World Cup to its sports portfolio through 2034.
