Horse Powertrain unveils waterproof B20 engine for off-road vehicles
Horse Powertrain, a joint venture between Renault and Geely, has unveiled the B20, a new 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine designed for extreme off-road capabilities. The engine features IPX8-rated waterproofing, allowing it to operate while submerged in water up to 1.1 meters deep. This protection extends to electrical components, sensors, and the seal between the engine and transmission.
Designed for hybrid electric vehicles (HEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and range-extended electric vehicles (REEV), the B20 can produce between 190 and 252 horsepower and 300 to 380 Nm of torque. It is engineered to maintain stable power even during extreme 100% grade climbs. The engine utilizes a Miller cycle to achieve a thermal efficiency of 48.4%.
The B20 is already being utilized in the Geely Galaxy Cruiser 700, a large off-road vehicle currently targeting the Chinese market. The technology aims to provide high-performance, efficient power for SUVs and pick-up trucks facing challenging aquatic and terrain obstacles.
