Zeeland implements measures to combat agricultural water scarcity

Authorities in Zeeland and the municipality of Borsele are implementing new measures to combat drought and water scarcity affecting the agricultural sector. The municipality of Borsele has launched a 'kansenkaart' (opportunity map) to assist farmers in identifying effective water storage measures based on soil structure, groundwater levels, and the presence of fresh or salt water.

In the broader province of Zeeland, a subsidy of 3.3 million euros has been allocated for the construction of freshwater basins. This initiative aims to help farmers store rainwater for irrigation during dry periods, thereby reducing pressure on the drinking water network. The subsidy covers up to 40 percent of project costs, with a maximum of 50,000 euros per farmer. Applications for these basins are scheduled to run from December 2, 2026, to February 25, 2027.

These developments come as climate change increases risks such as drought and salinization. Recent dry periods have already impacted fruit production in the region, resulting in smaller apples and pears with potentially shorter shelf lives.
