Zeelugt Market project reaches groundbreaking
Construction has officially commenced on a G$1.3 billion market project in Zeelugt, West Coast Demerara. Minister of Local Government and Regional Development Priya Manickchand performed the groundbreaking ceremony on September 16.
The new facility is designed to expand organized vending space, increasing capacity from approximately 54 current street-side vendors to nearly 90. The development will include both a dry market for goods such as clothing, jewelry, and crafts, and a wet market for meat, fish, and poultry.
Beyond trading stalls, the project features parking, a taxi bay, administrative and training facilities, a children’s play area, and modern sanitation and waste-management systems. The construction is being executed across four lots following a competitive bidding process and is expected to take 14 months to complete. The project is part of a broader government initiative to improve community infrastructure, including roads and drainage.
