Zeewolde town hall implements bat conservation before renovation
The Zeewolde town hall is preparing for a renovation scheduled for next year. To protect local wildlife, authorities are implementing measures from September 21 to 25 to make the building 'nature-free' for protected bat species.
Ecologists have identified six habitats belonging to common and Nathusius' pipistrelle bats within the building. To prevent these animals from being trapped during construction, specialized exit flaps—described as resembling 'bat slides'—are being installed in openings and crevices. These allow bats to exit the building while preventing them from re-entering.
As a temporary solution, custom-made bat boxes in black and white have been hung on the exterior. The different colors allow the bats to choose between warmer or cooler environments. Once the renovation is complete, the temporary housing will be removed in consultation with an ecologist so the bats can return to the town hall.
