Zelensky overhauls Ukraine security service leadership
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky announced a sweeping reshuffle of the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) on 30 July. He appointed Brigadier General Oleh Fedorov as head of the Alpha Special Operations Center, replacing Yevhen Khmara, who continues as acting defence minister. Zelensky also named definitive heads for SBU regional directorates in the eight oblasts of Chernivtsi, Sumy, Poltava, Cherkasy, Lviv, Ternopil, Mykolaiv and Zhytomyr.
In addition, the president installed former acting economy minister Oleksii Sobolev as deputy head of the presidential office. The changes follow earlier moves, including the 22 July appointment of Mykhailo Drapatyi as commander of Ukraine’s armed forces, succeeding Oleksandr Syrskyi. The reshuffle is presented as part of a broader restructuring of military and governmental leadership amid the ongoing war with Russia.
