Trump waives Russia energy sanctions and tariffs

President Donald Trump has issued an executive order waiving key sanctions and tariffs mandated by the Lindsey O. Graham Sanctioning Russia and Iran Act of 2026. The decision suspends measures that would have imposed tariffs of up to 100 percent on major importers of Russian oil and gas, as well as sanctions targeting Russian officials, financial institutions, and the so-called “shadow fleet.”

Trump cited the protection of United States national interests as the primary justification for the waiver. Additionally, the administration has reached an agreement with Vladimir Putin to supply Russian diesel to global and US markets to help stabilize fuel prices. Russian officials, including Deputy Prime Minister Alexander Novak, noted that diesel shipments to the US could begin within 15 to 20 days.

The move has drawn sharp criticism from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who characterized the waiver as a “gift to Putin” and an encouragement of Russian aggression. Bipartisan opposition has also emerged in the US, with lawmakers calling the decision irresponsible. Secretary of State Marco Rubio stated that the President will use a 60-day period to evaluate the economic impact of these measures on both the domestic and global economies.
