Zelenskyy visit to Belgrade sparks debate on Serbian foreign policy

The recent visit of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to Belgrade has drawn varied interpretations regarding Serbia's foreign policy direction. While some domestic opposition figures and international media outlets suggested the visit signaled a shift away from Russia toward the West, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov defended Serbian President Aleksandar Vučić. Lavrov described Vučić as an experienced politician who bravely withstands pressure from Brussels to align with EU sanctions against Russia.

Diplomatic analysts have noted that the visit functioned largely as a diplomatic spectacle. Former diplomat Slobodan Šoja suggested that the lack of a personal airport reception by Vučić did not constitute a diplomatic failure, noting that such receptions are rare and typically reserved for specific high-stakes economic agreements.

Despite the political scrutiny, Serbia maintained its stance on respecting the territorial integrity of internationally recognized states. Discussions between Vučić and Zelenskyy reportedly focused on economic cooperation, infrastructure, energy, and free trade agreements, rather than shifts in sanctions policy.
