Stephen Hubbard released from Russian detention

Stephen Hubbard, a 74-year-old retired American teacher, has been released from Russian detention and has returned to the United States. Hubbard had been imprisoned since 2022 on charges of acting as a mercenary for Ukrainian forces, a charge he denies. He was sentenced to nearly seven years in a penal colony in 2024.

The release occurred during a meeting in St. Petersburg between Russian President Vladimir Putin and U.S. special envoy Steve Witkoff. President Donald Trump stated that the release followed a direct request he made to Putin during a phone call the previous week and noted that no prisoner exchange was required.

Witkoff drew significant criticism from Republican lawmakers after describing Putin as a “humanitarian” during the meeting. Senators Thom Tillis and John Cornyn, along with Representative Don Bacon, condemned the remarks, with Cornyn describing Putin as a “cold-blooded killer.”

In a separate development, Putin announced that Russia is prepared to rejoin trilateral peace talks involving the United States and Ukraine, aiming for a final agreement rather than a temporary ceasefire. Additionally, Russia announced plans to send 40,000 tons of diesel to the U.S. following a sanctions waiver granted by the U.S. Treasury Department.
