Zelensky rejects election calls, warns of national division
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has rejected calls to hold elections during the ongoing war, warning that such a move would act as a ‘tsunami’ that could split the country apart. His comments come in response to former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, who has advocated for establishing a safe and legal mechanism to restore democratic processes despite the conflict.
Under current Ukrainian law, national elections are prohibited while martial law is in effect. Zelensky emphasized that his priority remains completing the war and maintaining national sovereignty, noting that elections without guaranteed security from military strikes would be neither safe nor legitimate. He also suggested that the responsibility for creating conditions for a secure vote lies partly with international allies.
Amidst this debate, political tensions in Ukraine have risen. Fedorov, who was dismissed from his post in July, has criticized the government's handling of corruption and called for democratic renewal. Meanwhile, Zelensky has noted reports that Russia may plan to mobilize an additional 300,000 troops following its own parliamentary elections in September.
