Zelestra and EDP expand solar-plus-storage partnership in Spain

Zelestra and EDP have signed two new power purchase agreements (PPAs) to hybridize operational solar plants in Spain with battery energy storage systems (BESS). This expansion brings their partnership to a total of four hybrid projects, representing more than 1 GWh of contracted storage capacity across the country.

The new agreements involve the Pedroso solar plant in Seville and the Valkyria solar plant in Castilla-La Mancha. At the Pedroso site, Zelestra will develop a 25 MW BESS with approximately 100 MWh of storage. At the Valkyria site, a 90.45 MW BESS with approximately 362 MWh of storage will be integrated with the 150 MWdc solar plant. Both battery systems are designed with a four-hour duration.

By hybridizing existing operational plants, the companies aim to increase grid flexibility more rapidly, as these sites already possess necessary land, grid connections, and generation infrastructure. This follows previous agreements in Trujillo, Extremadura, and Cáceres, establishing a growing footprint for integrated renewable and storage assets in the Spanish market.
