Zendesk launches specialized AI agents to automate business workflows

Zendesk has announced the launch of specialized AI agents designed to automate up to 80% of business tasks. These include industry-specific agents, starting with the retail sector to handle order management, returns, and shipping issues, as well as custom agents that allow companies to build no-code workflows tailored to their unique business processes.

At the Zendesk Showcase Tokyo 2026, company leadership addressed the evolving role of human workers in the age of generative AI. Global CTO Adrian McDermott noted that despite fears of job displacement, customer service employment is actually growing faster than the overall economy. He attributed this to the Jevons Paradox, where increased efficiency through AI leads to higher demand for services, and the fact that AI and human operator costs remain nearly equal.

Zendesk is also expanding its integration capabilities through the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allowing its AI to access real-time data from existing systems like Salesforce and ServiceNow. In Japan, the company has strengthened its presence by obtaining ISMAP certification and currently serves 3,000 domestic clients.
