Zenith Bank breach exposes customer emails and phone numbers
Zenith Bank confirmed that hackers accessed a limited set of customer data – specifically email addresses and telephone numbers – in a breach that the bank says is part of a wider global cyber‑attack targeting organisations across multiple sectors. The bank stressed that its core banking systems and digital channels remain secure and fully operational, and that no financial or account credentials were compromised.
In response, Zenith Bank activated its incident‑response protocols, enhanced its cybersecurity measures and urged customers to remain vigilant against phishing emails, texts or calls that could seek passwords, PINs or one‑time codes. The breach follows similar incidents reported by other Nigerian banks, including Guaranty Trust Bank, and comes after the Central Bank of Nigeria warned the public about fraudulent communications impersonating financial institutions. Analysts note that despite the coordinated wave of attacks, Nigerian banks have kept services running and deposits safe, highlighting the sector’s resilience and rapid response to the cyber threat.
