Zenitia project launches to accelerate climate-neutral aviation

The Zenitia project, a European initiative coordinated by the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid (UC3M), has officially launched its international consortium. The 30-month project aims to accelerate the transition toward climate-neutral aviation through the advanced integration of airspace and new aircraft fleets.

Supported by the SESAR 3 Joint Undertaking under Horizon Europe, the consortium includes major organizations such as Boeing and the University of Cambridge. The initiative seeks to develop science-based methods to safely and efficiently integrate next-generation aircraft and new fuel types into existing systems.

Project leaders noted that current scientific knowledge is insufficient to fully characterize the performance of revolutionary aircraft and their associated climate impacts. Zenitia intends to address these gaps by providing comprehensive evaluations to guide decisions regarding emerging technologies, fuel supply chains, infrastructure readiness, and regulatory frameworks.
