Zero Waste Movement celebrates 9th anniversary and global expansion
The Zero Waste Movement, launched in Turkey on September 27, 2017, under the auspices of Emine Erdoğan, is celebrating its ninth anniversary. Originally a national initiative to protect natural resources and promote a circular economy, the movement has evolved into a global environmental campaign.
Key milestones include the United Nations General Assembly's 2022 decision to adopt the Zero Waste initiative and the declaration of March 30 as International Zero Waste Day. Emine Erdoğan currently chairs the UN Zero Waste High-Level Advisory Board.
Economic and environmental data released by Minister Murat Kurum indicates that the movement has processed 90 million tons of recyclable waste, contributing 365 billion TL to the economy. Notable achievements include saving 2 trillion liters of water, 270 billion kWh of energy, and preventing the cutting of approximately 613 million trees. The movement's current theme, ‘From 0 to COP31: Together for the World,’ aligns with Turkey's upcoming presidency of the COP31 climate summit, aiming to integrate zero waste principles into global climate action and methane reduction targets.
