ZET introduces contactless payments for Zagreb public transport

Zagreb's public transport provider, ZET, is modernizing its fare collection system to allow direct payments via contactless bank cards and digital wallets. The upgrade will support Visa and Mastercard, as well as services like Apple Pay and Google Pay.

The modernization project covers more than 700 vehicles, including trams and buses. Implementation will be gradual, with full integration across the entire fleet expected by summer 2027. The procurement process for new validators and central control units is currently underway.

Under the new system, passengers can validate their fare by tapping a contactless card, smartphone, or smartwatch on a validator. For ticket inspections, passengers will not need to present paper tickets or mobile banking data; instead, they will simply tap the same payment method used for validation onto the inspector's device to verify the transaction.
