Zettelkasten note-taking methods and digital implementation
The Zettelkasten, or Slip-box, method focuses on building a long-lasting knowledge base through short, atomic, and densely-linked notes. Unlike traditional note-taking that often adopts the structure of a specific book, the Zettelkasten approach emphasizes creating notes that are optimized for future reading by explaining topics with low context.
In digital implementations, users are increasingly utilizing markdown-based networked note-taking tools like Obsidian to maintain data ownership. Recent updates to Obsidian, such as the ability to define aliases within YAML frontmatter, have improved the functionality of unlinked mentions. This allows users to link notes more effectively, even when using Zettelkasten IDs in filenames, by recognizing various aliases for a single concept.
