Turkish Constitutional Court allows YENİ Parti to retain its name
The Constitutional Court of Turkey has rejected a request to invalidate the name and emblem of the YENİ Parti, allowing the political party to continue using its current identity. The legal challenge was initiated by the Yenilik Partisi, which argued that the similarity between the two names violated the Political Parties Law.
The process began after the Chief Public Prosecutor of the Court of Cassation issued a notice for YENİ Parti to change its name to avoid confusion. When the party did not comply within the allotted timeframe, the matter was escalated to the Constitutional Court. Following a review of the party's defense and expert opinions regarding potential confusion, the High Court ruled by a majority vote to deny the removal of the name from the political party registry.
YENİ Parti leader Özgür Özel welcomed the decision, stating that the party's name was chosen by the people and that legal experts had previously confirmed there was no risk of confusion. Meanwhile, Yenilik Partisi leader Öztürk Yılmaz criticized the ruling as a political decision that would marginalize his party.
