Cemil Tugay joins AK Party, sparking protests in İzmir

İzmir Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Cemil Tugay has officially joined the AK Party, a move that has sparked significant political reaction. During the ceremony where he received his party badge from President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Tugay stated, “En iyi siyasetin hizmet olduğunu anladım” (I realized that the best politics is service).

Opposition leaders have reacted strongly to the defection. Özgür Özel, leader of the Yeni Parti, visited detained local officials in Mersin and criticized the current administration, claiming that Tugay's move was influenced by threats and blackmail regarding legal files. He emphasized that the party would continue to fight for democratic will and justice.

In İzmir, the transition has led to public demonstrations. Various political groups, including the CHP and HKP, have organized protests to voice their opposition to the move, characterizing it as a betrayal of the voters' mandate. Conversely, some local citizens expressed hope that the alignment with the central government might help resolve long-standing urban issues such as infrastructure and pollution.
