Özgür Özel alleges major fund crisis and municipal cover-up
Yeni Parti leader Özgür Özel has raised significant allegations regarding a major fund crisis in Turkey, claiming that approximately 455,000 individual investors have been defrauded. Özel estimates the total economic impact at roughly 90 billion dollars, citing a 3.5 trillion lira loss in the stock market and 800 billion lira remaining in 131 liquidated funds.
Özel further asserted that recent police operations targeting three municipal leaders in Mersin are a strategic attempt by the ruling AK Party to divert public attention from this financial crisis. He criticized the involvement of AK Party officials in the Fund Coordination Board, questioning the independence of the investigation.
Separately, Ankara Metropolitan Municipality Mayor Mansur Yavaş addressed rumors regarding his potential move to the AK Party and his presidential candidacy. Yavaş clarified that while he had previously prepared a resignation from the CHP, he had shelved the decision following discussions with Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu. He emphasized that his current priority remains his duties in Ankara.
