The Constitutional Court of Turkey has issued a landmark ruling regarding the freedom of expression of Yeni Parti leader Özgür Özel. The court determined that Özel's 2020 criticisms of former Vice President Fuat Oktay's professional history constituted a violation of his rights. Consequently, the court overturned a previous decision requiring Özel to pay 10,000 TL in damages and ordered the state to pay him 50,000 TL in non-pecuniary damages. The case has been sent back to the Ankara 25th Civil Court of First Instance for retrial to address the consequences of the violation.
