Zhang Yimou updates progress on ‘The Three-Body Problem’ film

Chinese director Zhang Yimou provided updates on his upcoming film adaptation of the science fiction epic ‘The Three-Body Problem’ during the opening ceremony of the Busan International Film Festival. Serving as the president of the festival’s competition jury, Zhang noted that the project is moving steadily forward despite the complexities of the source material.

Zhang explained that the production team has spent several years polishing the script due to the inherent difficulty of adapting Liu Cixin’s novel into a cinematic format. To address high audience expectations, the production has collected approximately 400,000 online comments from fans to better understand their hopes and concerns.

Produced by Beijing Enlight Media, the adaptation is expected to utilize significant artificial intelligence components to meet the visual demands of modern audiences. The novel, which is part of the ‘Remembrance of Earth’s Past’ trilogy, has previously seen adaptations by Netflix, Tencent, and Bilibili.
