Zhang Youxia removed from China's state Central Military Commission
China has formally removed senior military leaders Zhang Youxia and Liu Zhenli from their positions in the state Central Military Commission (CMC). The announcement was made by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress.
Zhang Youxia, a former vice-chairman of the CMC and a high-ranking member of the Politburo, was removed following an investigation into suspected serious violations of discipline and law that began in January. Zhang was previously regarded as one of China's most powerful generals and a close ally of President Xi Jinping.
Liu Zhenli, who served as a CMC member and the chief of staff of the CMC's Joint Staff Department, was also removed from his state CMC position. The move follows months of scrutiny regarding both officials as part of a broader anti-corruption campaign within the Chinese military and government.
