China has removed two of its highest-ranking military officers, General Zhang Youxia and General Liu Zhenli, from the state Central Military Commission (CMC). The decision was announced by the Standing Committee of the National People's Congress on August 28, 2026.

Zhang Youxia, a member of the Politburo and vice-chairman of the CMC, was considered a close ally of President Xi Jinping and one of the most powerful figures in the Chinese military. Liu Zhenli, the chief of staff of the CMC's Joint Staff Department, was also removed from his position as a CMC member. Both officers had been under investigation since January 2026 for suspected serious violations of discipline and law, a term typically associated with corruption.

The removals have significantly reduced the CMC's active membership, leaving only two members: President Xi Jinping and Zhang Shangmin. This shake-up is part of a broader, ongoing anti-corruption campaign within the People's Liberation Army that has targeted various branches, including the Rocket Force and defense procurement systems.

In addition to their military removals, the Standing Committee also stripped Zhang, Liu, and two other senior commanders, Ju Qiansheng and Zhong Shaojun, of their status as deputies to the National People's Congress.
