Zhengzhou teenager dies from type 2 diabetes complications
A 15-year-old boy in Zhengzhou, Henan Province, has died following complications from type 2 diabetes. The teenager was admitted to the hospital in a coma with blood glucose levels exceeding the measurement limits of medical devices, recorded at over 33.3 mmol/L.
Medical examinations determined the cause of death as type 2 diabetes complicated by diabetic ketoacidosis and multi-organ failure. The condition developed rapidly overnight, and despite intensive emergency efforts, the boy could not be saved.
At age 14, the boy stood 1.85 meters tall and weighed 107 kg, placing him in the category of severe obesity. His family noted they had attempted to manage his weight by limiting meat and increasing vegetable consumption, attributing his size to puberty and physical constitution. However, medical experts noted that certain foods perceived as vegetables may actually contain high levels of starch, sugar, or energy depending on how they are prepared.
