Zhong Shanshan criticizes e-commerce platforms and price competition

Zhong Shanshan, the founder of Nongfu Spring and former richest man in China, has issued a sharp critique of the country’s e-commerce platforms and current market competition trends.

In an interview with CCTV, Zhong described e-commerce platforms as pervasive middlemen that have “wiped out” many urban retailers. He argued that these platforms function as dynamic middlemen that adjust charges per order, unlike traditional trading platforms with standardized fees. Zhong also expressed concern that excessive screen time on mobile devices is stifling spontaneous consumption, creativity, and emotional responsiveness among younger generations.

Furthermore, Zhong criticized the prevailing trend of “price wars” or intense price competition, suggesting that companies should focus on high quality and premium value rather than merely cutting prices to gain market share. He stated that such competition is “immature” and causes significant damage to social productive forces. His comments have sparked debate regarding the future of China's market economy and the regulatory direction of the platform economy.
