Zhongli Zhongyuan Festival to feature traditional water lantern parades

The 2026 Zhongli Zhongyuan Festival is scheduled to take place on August 31 and September 1. Organized by the Taoyuan City Government, Zhongli District Office, and Renhai Temple, the event aims to blend traditional folk customs with Hakka cultural elements and modern innovation.

On August 31, the festival will feature a traditional water lantern parade, which includes the unique practice of manually pulling and erecting lantern rows. The procession will travel through various neighborhoods, including the Lao Jie Xi Bridge, to pray for peace and prosperity.

On September 1, a “Celebration Night” will be held in front of Renhai Temple, featuring musical performances by various artists and Hakka-themed activities such as DIY workshops and food markets. This year’s event also emphasizes social welfare and sustainability; for example, rice-based “pig” art installations will be created to promote food conservation, with materials to be donated to those in need after the festivities.
