Zhonglian Oil General Manager Detained in Taiwan Carcinogenic Oil Probe
Taiwan's Taichung District Prosecutors Office launched a large‑scale investigation into a carcinogenic‑oil scandal involving Zhonglian Oil Co. and downstream firms Fushou, Fumao and Taishan. Prosecutors, together with the Food and Drug Administration and local health bureaus, searched six locations, seizing production equipment, documents, test reports and electronic devices.
Thirteen senior executives and two witnesses were questioned, including Zhonglian’s general manager, Yu (surname), who was ordered detained and denied bail over concerns of evidence tampering, forgery and collusion. Ten other defendants were released on bail ranging from NT$500,000 to NT$20,000,000. The investigation will continue to trace the oil’s source, manufacturing process, sales distribution and any further violations of Taiwan’s Food Safety Act.
