Zhu Rongji: Former Chinese Premier cremated following death at 98

Former Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji, a key architect of the country's economic reforms, was cremated in Beijing on Tuesday, August 18, 2026. Zhu passed away on August 12 at the age of 98.

To honor the former leader, national flags were flown at half-mast across mainland China, including at Tian'anmen Square, government ministries, and Chinese embassies and consulates. Similar mourning protocols were observed in the Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Regions.

Zhu, who served as Premier from 1998 to 2003, is credited with driving significant economic overhauls, including state-sector restructuring and China's accession to the World Trade Organization. While state media praised him as an “outstanding proletarian revolutionist, statesman and leader of the Party and the state,” reports indicate that authorities have also implemented heightened security in Beijing and censored online discussions to manage public sentiment.

The funeral proceedings were attended by senior leaders, including President Xi Jinping, current Premier Li Qiang, and former leader Hu Jintao.
