Yusuf posted on X regarding Sagal Abdi-Wali, the leader of Camden Council and a frontrunner to replace Keir Starmer in the Holborn and St Pancras by-election. Yusuf noted that the candidate was born in Somalia and asked, 'Do you understand what's happening?'

Jonathan Reynolds defended Abdi-Wali, noting she has lived in the UK for decades and has made significant contributions to her community. Within Reform UK, former Tory minister Nadine Dorries described the tweet as 'nasty,' while mayoral candidate Laila Cunningham expressed confusion over the intent of the remarks.

Reform UK's economic spokesperson, Robert Jenrick, rejected the allegations of racism. Jenrick argued that it is legitimate to question whether parliamentary candidates are entirely committed to the interests of the country, regardless of their place of birth.
