Zieleniak women's wartime trauma remembered after decades of silence

Anna Augustyniak’s book "Zieleniak" recounts the brutal treatment of girls and women detained by German forces in a transit camp at Zieleniak, near Grójecka Street, during the first days of the Warsaw Uprising. The narrative highlights the extreme suffering, including sexual violence, endured by the victims.

A commemorative plaque installed in 2022 to mark the site sparked controversy; local residents opposed reviving the painful memories, preferring the area to be associated with everyday life rather than death. After many years of silence, survivors are now beginning to share their experiences, confronting the lingering shame and trauma.

Katarzyna Janowska, commenting on the book, emphasizes the unprecedented level of brutality described and the long‑standing reluctance of the community to acknowledge the atrocities committed at Zieleniak.
