Zikra: Night of Memories performance held in Baku
The performance “Zikra: Night of Memories” was staged at the Azerbaijan State Academic National Drama Theatre on October 31 as part of the Baku International Art Festival (BIAF-2026).
Commissioned by Wadi AlFann, an international cultural venue in AlUla, Saudi Arabia, the production is the latest work by award-winning director and choreographer Akram Khan. The performance blends modern dance with classical Indian dance. Visual director Manal Al Dowayan collaborated on the project, also handling stage design and costume design.
The project is presented in partnership with the Culture Fund under the Abu Dhabi Department of Culture and Tourism. The title “Zikra” means “memory” and “remembrance” in Arabic. The performance is conceived as a one-night ritual where women gather to connect the past with the present through shared memories and spiritual renewal.
The original music was composed by Indian-American singer and composer Aditya Prakash, featuring more than 40 international performers, including audio recordings from local musicians in AlUla. The project was developed in collaboration with Madrasat Addeera, the AlUla Music Center, and members of the local community.
