Zimbabwe announces new land claim resolutions

The government of President Emmerson Mnangagwa has announced a new phase in Zimbabwe’s land reform process, aimed at resolving three distinct categories of land claims. Agriculture Minister Anxious Masuka informed Parliament that these actions are intended to fulfill legal obligations rather than reverse the land redistribution programs initiated after 2000.

Under the first category, 67 farms protected by bilateral investment promotion and protection agreements (BIPPAs) will be returned to investors from Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, and Switzerland.

In the second category, 840 farms that were reportedly included in the original acquisition process in error will be restored to their Black Zimbabwean owners.

Finally, 409 white farmers who have continued to reside on farms alongside land reform beneficiaries will be permitted to purchase the land or portions of it they occupy. This will be facilitated through a set-off mechanism tied to compensation for eligible farm improvements.
