Wicknell Chivayo and wife killed in Zimbabwe helicopter crash

A helicopter crash in the Marondera Rural area of Zimbabwe killed six people on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Among the victims were prominent businessman Wicknell Chivayo and his wife, Lucy Muteke. The aircraft, identified as an Airbus H120 Colibri, reportedly went down at approximately 5:00 p.m. near Kudenga Farm.

Authorities, including the Zimbabwe Republic Police and government spokesperson Nick Mangwana, confirmed there were no survivors. Preliminary reports indicate that a fuel leak and subsequent fire occurred after the aircraft struck the ground. An intact black box has been recovered from the site, and forensic investigations are underway to formally identify the remains, which were described as badly burned.

Chivayo, the managing director of Intratrek Zimbabwe, was a well-known and polarizing figure, recognized for his lavish lifestyle and close ties to President Emmerson Mnangagwa and the ruling ZANU-PF party. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed his condolences, describing Chivayo as a dear friend. Investigations by the Civil Aviation Authority of Zimbabwe are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the crash.
