Zimbabwe climate resilience initiatives focus on smart farming and renewable energy

Agricultural research institutions and international organizations are emphasizing climate-resilient technologies in Zimbabwe to combat increasing weather variability. At the 2026 Zimbabwe Agricultural Show in Harare, partners including the International Maize and Wheat Improvement Center (CIMMYT), the International Livestock Research Institute (ILRI), and HarvestPlus Solutions are showcasing climate-smart crops, livestock technologies, and biofortified foods to help farmers increase productivity.

Simultaneously, United Nations Resident Coordinator Dr. Rosemary Kalapurakal has called for enhanced partnerships between the government, private sector, and local communities to scale up climate-smart development. During a visit to Matabeleland North, Kalapurakal inspected initiatives in Victoria Falls and Hwange focused on renewable energy, health, and agriculture. These efforts include solar-powered nutrition gardens supported by the World Food Programme and solar energy solutions at Victoria Falls District Hospital to strengthen service delivery during climate shocks like El Niño-induced droughts.
