Zimbabwe drivers could face new professional qualification requirements

The Drivers Association of Zimbabwe has petitioned Parliament to enact legislation that would transform driving from an occupation into a regulated profession. If adopted, professional drivers in sectors such as public transport, haulage, and logistics would be required to meet specific educational, competency, and ethical standards.

The proposal seeks to establish a legally recognized statutory body responsible for setting entry requirements, registering drivers, and implementing disciplinary measures for those who fail to meet prescribed standards. Nicholas Mabwe, president of the association and a former Zimbabwe Republic Police officer, argued that the current lack of a regulatory body contributes to transport sector weaknesses and road safety challenges.

Speaker of the National Assembly Jacob Mudenda confirmed that the petition has been received and referred to the Portfolio Committee on Transport and Infrastructural Development for consideration.
