Zimbabwe faces economic strain from tax compliance and fertilizer import crisis

Zimbabwe is facing significant economic challenges related to financial literacy, tax compliance, and industrial underutilization. A recent engagement by the Zimbabwe Revenue Authority (ZIMRA) in Rusape highlighted concerns regarding the national culture of taxation. Discussions focused on whether citizens view tax as a civic duty or merely an additional financial burden during periods of high inflation and currency instability.

Simultaneously, the country is grappling with a major fertilizer crisis. Despite having a domestic production capacity of approximately two million tonnes per year, Zimbabwe spent US$2.11 billion on fertilizer imports between 2018 and 2024. This reliance on imports has led to the underutilization of local facilities, resulting in job losses and lost livelihoods. Legislator Richard Tsvangirai noted that the shutdown of operations at companies like G&W Industrial Minerals and Dorowa Minerals has directly impacted hundreds of workers, emphasizing that the crisis extends beyond foreign currency requirements to the human cost of industrial stagnation.
