Zimbabwe Lake Kariba ferry disaster death toll rises to 72
The death toll from a ferry disaster on Lake Kariba in Zimbabwe has risen to 72 following the recovery of additional bodies. The vessel, operated by the Rural Infrastructure Development Agency (RIDA), capsized on Tuesday due to rough waters and strong winds.
Authorities report that the ferry was significantly overloaded. While the vessel has an official capacity of 90 passengers, estimates suggest as many as 153 people may have been on board. Among the deceased, at least 18 are children, including several infants.
President Emmerson Mnangagwa has declared a State of Disaster to facilitate search, recovery, and humanitarian efforts. Rescue operations involving the military, police, and local fishermen continue, though cold temperatures have complicated the retrieval of victims from the water. Approximately 77 people were successfully rescued from the site.
