Zimbabwe Government to Review Intersex Laws After Court Challenge

The Zimbabwean government has launched a review of its legal framework for intersex persons after a landmark constitutional court case. Justice Minister Ziyambi Ziyambi, Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare Minister Edgar Moyo and Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora convened a high‑level meeting with experts, civil‑society groups and intersex individuals to discuss reforms. The review is supported by research from the Law Development Commission and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The court challenge highlighted that existing birth‑registration and identity‑document laws force intersex citizens into a binary male‑female classification, creating barriers to education, employment and healthcare. The ministries are compiling recommendations for parliament to introduce legal recognition measures that would accommodate intersex births without invasive medical interventions.
