Zimbabwe officials argue Constitutional Amendment No. 3 is irreversible
President Emmerson Mnangagwa and government officials have informed the Constitutional Court that Constitutional Amendment No. 3 (CAA3) is irreversible, arguing it has completed all legally required legislative stages. The government's position was filed in response to a challenge by six war veterans seeking to contest the new presidential electoral system, which allows Parliament to elect the President.
This legal battle follows the enactment of CAA3, which extended presidential and parliamentary terms from five to seven years. Amidst these changes, political discussions have emerged regarding a potential further amendment, informally called ‘CAB4’. Some members of the ruling Zanu PF party are advocating for President Mnangagwa to remain in office beyond 2030, with some calls suggesting a term extension until 2037. The party is expected to review its constitution and present resolutions during its upcoming National People’s Conference in October.
