Zimbabwe pays $508 million to white farmers for land compensation

Zimbabwe has paid approximately $508 million in compensation to white farmers whose land was seized during the country’s land reform program over two decades ago. This payout is part of a larger $3.5 billion compensation deal established in 2020 to resolve disputes regarding improvements and investments made on expropriated properties.

Deputy Finance Minister Kudakwashe Mnangagwa stated that the $508 million total includes $12.6 million in cash, with the remainder provided through dollar-denominated bonds. While some farmers rejected the bond arrangement, the government maintains that the use of these instruments was voluntary and that acceptance of the payments constitutes agreement to the terms.

The compensation efforts are part of a broader strategy by the administration of President Emmerson Mnangagwa to repair international relations and regain access to global capital markets. The government has also begun addressing claims involving foreign-owned properties, including recent efforts to resolve claims linked to Denmark, Germany, the Netherlands, Switzerland, and the former Yugoslavia.
