Zimbabwe political tensions rise amid activist abduction and claims of law abuse
Political tensions are rising in Zimbabwe amid reports of an activist abduction and accusations of government overreach. Knox Chivero, a prominent anti-regime activist and leader of the Geza Revolution, is reported missing. Chivero has previously opposed President Mnangagwa and called for mass resistance against constitutional amendments.
The Action Democratic Movement (ADM) has formally accused the government of abusing the Maintenance of Peace and Order Act (MOPA). The opposition group alleges the law is being applied selectively to restrict opposition activities and civil society while allowing ruling ZANU PF gatherings to proceed without similar hurdles.
Simultaneously, Gody Nkatha, leader of the ZANU PF-aligned activist group Varakashi 4ED, has condemned what he describes as a smear campaign against the First Family. Nkatha specifically defended First Lady Dr. Auxillia Mnangagwa and the First Twins against alleged misinformation and malicious attacks from media platforms and journalists.
