Zimbabwe political unrest and alleged plot to assassinate Vice President Chiwenga
An open letter published on 4 August 2026 claims that President Emmerson Mnangagwa and ZANU‑PF have organised a detailed assassination plot against Vice President Constantino Chiwenga. The alleged scheme includes poisoning his bodyguards, contaminating his bedroom, staging a fatal plane crash, and hiring a hitman to shoot him at a public event. The letter, attributed to exile war veteran Gageni Ajanga, warns that anyone opposing the regime could be targeted as the government pushes forward with its controversial CAB 3 agenda.
A separate analysis of Zimbabwe’s July 31 2026 protests notes that the anticipated mass uprising failed to materialise, largely because millions of citizens have emigrated over the past decades. The exodus, driven by land reform, sanctions, economic collapse and hyperinflation, has drained the country of potential protestors, leaving the regime largely unchallenged despite widespread dissatisfaction.
