Zimbabwe POW reveals Russian recruitment of African fighters for Ukraine war

Tatenda Tarwire (also spelled Tagwireyi), a 37‑year‑old Zimbabwean, told Ukrainian authorities how he was lured from Zimbabwe to Moscow with promises of a $20,000 signing bonus and a monthly salary, only to have his passport and phone seized and be sent to the front lines in Ukraine. He described a recruitment pipeline that targeted men from Zimbabwe, Cameroon, South Africa, Burundi, Rwanda, Benin, Kenya and Nigeria, promising safe jobs but delivering forced military service and brutal combat conditions. In a video released by Ukrainian officials, Tarwire warned other Africans not to trust Russian agents, noting language barriers, confiscated documents and lack of support once deployed. His family has appealed to the Ukrainian government, the International Committee of the Red Cross and Zimbabwe’s foreign ministry for his repatriation, arguing he is a victim of human trafficking rather than a volunteer mercenary. The testimony highlights a wider illicit network exploiting vulnerable men from the Global South for Russia’s war effort in Ukraine.
